Spanish Cocoa Cake

  • 2 cups sifted cake flour, if desired use all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/3 cups buttermilk


  1. Preheat oven to 325⁰
  2. Whisk flour, cocoa, salt and baking soda together three times.Spanish Cocoa Cake powered sugar
  3. Cream shortening with sugar until fluffy.
  4. Add egg yolks and vanilla and beat thoroughly.
  5. Add sifted dry ingredients and milk alternately in small amounts, beating well after each addition.
  6. Pour into greased (8” x 8”) pan and bake in oven at 325° for 45 minutes or when you insert a toothpick into the center of the cake and it comes out clean.
  7. Sprinkle with powered sugar and serve.
  8. Makes one (8 x 8″) cake.
